Step 1 · Hide
Weight, finish and what it has been tested for.
Four things, all of them starting with which hide and what has been tested on it.
A leather garment is the hardest thing in this trade to get right, because it has to fit a body that moves while being made from a material that does not forgive a wrong cut. So the fitting happens before the cutting, in a calico or a cheap hide, and the real leather is cut once. It is slower and it is the only honest way: you cannot unpick a mistake in leather and leave no trace.
Weight, finish and what it has been tested for.
In calico, before any leather is cut.
Once, around the marks in the skin.
Stitched, edged and checked.
What goes in it, and how heavy.
Sized for the load, not the photograph.
Anchors and zip ends reinforced.
Loaded and carried before it leaves.
Most bags fail at a fitting, a strap anchor or a zip end rather than in the leather, which is why those three places get reinforced and the leather gets less credit than it is usually given. We will also ask what you carry and how heavy it is before agreeing a design, because a bag sized for a laptop and loaded with books stops being the bag you bought within a year.
Two things are said plainly rather than buried. The full price including delivery is shown before payment rather than revealed at the last step. And buying at a distance carries a statutory right to cancel within fourteen days, which is a right rather than a courtesy — except for a piece made to your specification, where it does not apply and where we tell you that before you order instead of afterwards.
Hide, dimensions and hardware.
Total, with delivery included.
Within the stated period.
14 days, or stated exceptions.
What has actually failed, and why.
Or say it is not worth doing.
Matching thread, weight and finish.
With what to do differently next time.
This is the service that argues against buying something new, which is why it is on the list. A jacket with a failed lining or a bag with a broken zip is usually worth a quarter of its replacement cost to put right and will then outlast whatever would have replaced it. Where a piece is beyond economic repair we say so and quote nothing, because a repair that costs more than the item is a sale disguised as a favour.
A free first conversation, with no obligation. If a repair is not worth doing we will say so and quote nothing.
